Walking in Hull

One of the best ways to discover what’s on offer in the city is to take your time and enjoy a leisurely stroll. It is the cheapest and easiest way to start improving your health and wellbeing – no gym memberships, no expensive kit required, simply leave the house and get walking.

From the charm of the city’s Victorian arcades to the modern, iconic structure of The Deep, in Hull city centre the best of the old and the new combine. Visit our parks and take in the scenery. Incorporate a walk around the Animal Education Centre or Ferens Boating Lake while you’re at East Park or have a wander around the Sensory Garden at Pickering Park. There is so much to see across Hull by foot.

Walking also provides an easy and cheap way of getting around on shorter journeys. As well as the network of footways and shortcuts which can make the trip quicker than driving.

There are also Public Rights of Way (PRoW) which can offer an alternative walking route in some areas of the city. 

Self guided trails

Follow that fish!  Pick up a Seven Seas Fish Trail leaflet from our tourist information centre and follow an A - Z of fish swimming across Hull’s pavements, through the Old Town and down to the beautiful riverfront. Seek out the hidden shrimp, but beware of the shark basking outside a high-street bank! The young and young at heart will enjoy exploring the city by finding the fish. 41 in total, catch them all by following Hull’s unique pavement of fish and net yourself a certificate on completion.

Few can resist glancing at a blue plaque to see what contributions, buildings or their occupants have made to local history.  A Guide to the City’s Heritage Plaques tells the story behind 30 distinctive plaques dotted around the Old Town. 

As you wander, you will find historic hostelries and cosmopolitan café bars tucked into the streets of the Old Town. From the George Hotel, with the smallest window in the city, to Ye Olde Black Boy with its resident ghost, the best way to discover the secrets of Hull’s traditional taverns is by picking up a free copy of Hull’s Ale Trail.
