Summer Reading Challenge
Get curious about reading and sign up to the Summer Reading Challenge!
Join the Gadgeteers on a reading adventure exploring science and innovation.
Pick up a free pack from any library. Read 6 books and collect rewards along the way - when you have completed the challenge you’ll receive a special Gadgeteers certificate too!
You can choose any books you like to count towards the Challenge. Fact, fiction, poetry, graphic novels, joke books – the choice is yours! eBooks and audiobooks count too, so you can read wherever and however you like.
The challenge runs from Saturday 23 July until Saturday 24 September.
You can also take part online at summerreadingchallenge.org.uk and access loads of great games and activities!
Free events and activities
Hull Libraries has a wide range of fun ways to keep the kids entertained this summer. From poetry to pottery, crafts sessions and author workshops to learning about the environment with Seedheart - a puppet show by Hull’s own Indigo Moon Theatre. A variety of activities will be offered across the city’s libraries helping to keep children of all ages engaged for free.
Here’s a flavour of what to expect at Hull Libraries this summer:

- Imagination Gaming
- Author visits with Steve Skidmore
- Interactive poetry word play sessions with Paul Cookson
- Live drawing tutorials with Calvin Innes
- Pottery sessions with Studio Eleven
- Animal Conservation and habitats talk with Sam’s Safari
- Street Dance workshops
- Beats Bus, learn to rap and perform your lyrics

All activities are free and places can be booked via EventBrite - hulllibraries.eventbrite.co.uk or by contacting the library.
Enter our writing competition, ‘What’s the Story?’ for a chance to win a special writing workshop and book tokens - and have your entry published in a specially produced book, distributed in Hull Libraries.
There are four categories for creative writing:
- Short story (500-700 words)
- A poem (doesn’t have to rhyme!)
- Comic strip (1 page A4, portrait or landscape)
- Blog (eg. book, game, film - up to 500 words)
Age categories: 7 - 10yrs / 11 - 14yrs
Deadline: Saturday 3 September 2022
