Business & IP Centre Hull, based in Hull Central Library, opened in June 2017 to support start-up businesses and entrepreneurs to develop the insight, skills and confidence they need to start and grow successful businesses.

The Business & IP Centre also provides entrepreneurs and SMEs across the UK with free access to databases, market research, journals, directories and reports worth thousands of pounds through 13 National Network Centres.

As part of a national project led by the British Library, the Centre has now received funding to roll out this service to partner libraries across the Hull, Humberside & the East Riding region.


We are currently looking for a Business Information Specialist to join our highly motivated team working across the Yorkshire & Humber region, to support the day-to-day delivery of Business & IP Centre services, including delivery of workshops, webinars ,events and one-to-one clinics (both face-to-face and online). 

You will play a key role in upskilling frontline staff on the use of specialist business collections, and how to deliver a business information reference service to enterprises and individuals and from all walks of life, working with the team to raise awareness and use of the Business & IP Centre and its region-wide services. This post is fixed term until 31st March 2023 and may be extended if further funding is secured.


You will have a masterclass certificate in IP training or be willing to work towards this within 12 months of starting in post; and a recognised qualification to degree level, postgraduate diploma or equivalent in librarianship, information science or an appropriate subject.


You will have excellent problem solving skills with the ability to think creatively and innovatively and excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to deal with challenging situations.


An ability to understand the information needs of users and resolve customer complaints by careful listening, helpful questioning and application of knowledge of specialist resources is essential.


You will have experience of using a wide range of ICT applications for a variety of purposes with a good working knowledge of business and intellectual property information resources, and you will be able to prepare written training packages for staff and customers.


Good reference and enquiry-handling skills is essential, together with an understanding of reference work gained from experience in a public-facing environment or professional training. 

You will need to have a good knowledge of library service initiatives, developments and resources in particular in relation to Business & Intellectual Property provision and associated client groups in the local area, with good experience of working with external agencies to develop and improve service delivery.
