We are surrounded by stories, every second of our lives, when we are awake and even when we are asleep.

Join Phil for an interactive session where he shows you how he went from reluctant reader to writer, how to spot stories in everyday life, and how YOU can be the one to write them down!

Phil was born and raised in Hull, and was hugely influenced as teenager by the plays of John Godber that he saw at Spring Street Theatre.

Hull is also the setting for many of his books, including Being Billy, Saving Daisy and the Storey Street series. He is the award-winning author of fifteen books for children and teenagers, and has spoken in schools and festivals both in the UK and around the world.

Hull Libraries Photography Competition

HULL LIBRARIES PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

We are pleased to be offering a photography competition during the summer holidays. The theme will be to take a photo of anywhere you want to which fits into the theme of:

‘A place that brings you joy’

This could be anywhere that is your special place to relax, chill and feel happy, where is your happy place? Is it the park, seaside, your den, bedroom, the garden, your favourite forest walk you have discovered during lockdown?

Explore and find that place for yourself, capture it and send in your entry, we can’t wait to see them all!!

The winners of this competition will receive a printed canvas of their photograph which will be made within our very own Makerspace department. Additional to this the winners will be invited to a free tour of the Makerspace when they collect their prize.

The competition is for age groups 5 to 11 years and 12 to 16 years, and runs from Monday 20 July until Saturday 12 September.

Send your photos to us by email - Hull.CentralLibrary@hcandl.co.uk by Sunday 13 September and share on social media using #HLJOY

NB: The winners will need to supply a high resolution image so we can use the best quality for printing your canvas!

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

The Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge, presented by The Reading Agency, is delivered in partnership with public libraries and funded by Arts Council England.

The Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays, providing lots of fun and enjoyment as well as helping to prevent the summer reading ‘dip’.

This year, the Summer Reading Challenge’s Silly Squad will celebrate funny books, happiness and laughter. Children taking part in the Challenge will join the Silly Squad, an adventurous team of animals who love to have a laugh and get stuck into all sorts of funny books!

Find out more about how you can get involved by visiting the Summer Reading Challenge website here.
